Workforce Governance & Registration Scheme Project - Update on Digital Touch Point Survey
As part of the Workforce Governance and Registration Scheme project, in late Summer 2023 we issued a ‘Digital Touch Point’ survey to sporting bodies that are working with us on the project.
The aim of this survey was to benchmark current levels of digital maturity, to inform the future development and adoption of a national registration scheme.
This survey asked the sporting bodies to self-evaluate their current digital systems and processes, to help us to develop an understanding of where each body currently sits in terms of their infrastructure, systems and technology. This survey is described within the project as ‘Digital Touch Point 1’.
The outcome of Digital Touch Point 1 will help to establish a picture of digital maturity across the sporting body landscape, and to inform plans for the infrastructure and technology developments required to commence a registration scheme pilot (as referenced in the recent ‘Get Active’ national sport and physical activity strategy from DCMS).
The sporting bodies that participated represented a cross-section of sports and varied in size from micro (employing fewer than 10 members of staff), to large (employing over 250 members of staff).
The survey asked sporting bodies to self-evaluate their approach to digital strategy, their technology infrastructure, data management and security, and their coaching workforce register.
Next steps
The insights from this part of the project will help us to understand some of the developments required within the sporting body system to support the future adoption of a national registration scheme.
The Digital Touch Point 1 survey is now being followed up, with sporting bodies engaging in individual workshops with the CIMSPA project team to explore and understand the platforms and processes that they use to manage the membership of their coaches and coaching workforce. This is described within the project as ‘Digital Touch Point 2’.
The results of Digital Touch Point 2 will provide a detailed picture of how sporting bodies across the sector manage systems in relation to information about the coaches that are registered with them. It will also help to inform aspects of the pilot registration scheme which will commence in 2024.

Their contribution and engagement is essential in helping to establish the technology-based developments that are required to support the future adoption of a national registration scheme, with the objective of ensuring that everyone taking part in sport and physical activity can enjoy safe and high-quality experiences, and be supported in achieving their goals in a positive environment.
