Health and wellbeing
Health and wellbeing is an industry area of increased public interest within the sport and physical activity sector. The government, businesses and individuals alike are all seeking the health benefits of physical activity involvement.
The UK currently faces significant public health challenges such as physical inactivity, obesity, substance abuse and mental health issues, which restrict quality of life and place an increasing strain on public services such as the NHS.
The sport and physical activity industry currently contains around 57,000 exercise professionals who contribute to the UK’s health and wellbeing agenda by supporting behaviour change. They do this by initiating conversations around lifestyle change when in routine contact with the public.
Sport and physical activity professionals are often working within this industry area without knowing it. Practitioners are involved in supporting individuals in improving their health and wellbeing through participation in physical activity and sport. They also help individuals to consider other lifestyle choices and changes which may benefit them.
