Overview and responsibilities

Assistant Swimming Teachers deliver fun, safe and inclusive swimming activities and support the swimming teacher in the delivery of swimming lessons to participants of all ages and abilities. Through their engaging, fun and safe delivery of activities, participants will build confidence in the water, develop core aquatic skills and improve their capability in all four swimming strokes.

Assistant Swimming Teachers understand how to support the Swimming Teacher to work with a range of participants with different abilities over a time period long enough to show improvement against their needs and aspirations.

Working hours

Assistant Swimming Teachers can be employed by fitness or leisure centres as well as private companies. They often work hours outside of the normal working day, including evenings, weekends and public holidays.

Education

Achieving an Assistant Swimming Teacher qualification demonstrates a good knowledge of:

  • maximising participant experience,
  • assisting with a swimming lesson,
  • participant welfare,
  • the role of an Assistant Swimming Teacher,
  • and industry legislation, guidance, organisational policies and procedures.

Once practitioners have gained an Assistant Swimming Teacher qualification, they often seek out further qualifications to enable them to work with specialist populations such as children or older adults. They can also progress to work as a Swimming Teacher with additional qualifications.
