Overview and responsibilities

An aspiring manager is anyone who works in the sport and physical activity sector who does not currently hold a management role but who aims to develop the necessary skills and experience to move into a management position in the future.

Aspiring managers are often working in the sector as team leaders, coordinators or supervisors and will have been introduced to the key themes and principles of management. They will have developed a basic understanding across a broad range of management related topics which build the foundation for progression into a managerial role and demonstrate skills and potential above their current technical role.

Education

As an aspiring manager, you may wish to develop your knowledge around basic management principles, leadership techniques, sector specific knowledge, regulatory and compliance and risk management. You should also look to develop and evidence your communication and interpersonal skills.

To be professionally recognised as a CIMSPA Aspiring Manager Member, we ask that you provide us with a reference as well as either:

  • evidence of holding a relevant CIMSPA-endorsed qualification, degree or apprenticeship certificate issued by a CIMSPA Awarding Organisation Parter or Higher Education Partner or the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE).
  • If you have a qualification or degree that is not endorsed by CIMSPA or is over five years old, or if you have an international qualification, we still encourage you to apply for professional recognition. We may, however, need to ask you for additional evidence of other training you have undertaken as part of your application.
  • your CV, including your responsibilities within your most recent role and any CPD undertaken.

Progression

If you currently work in a front-line management role and have over one year of experience, you may be considered an entry manager.

If not, you may wish to seek out further qualifications to enable you to work in a management role as an entry, general or senior manager.
